ZERO HUNGER
What’s the goal?
To end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Targets include sustainable and resilient food production, correcting trade distortions and ensuring functioning food commodity markets.
Why?
Extreme hunger and malnutrition remain barriers to sustainable development.
Our contribution
Feeding schemes supported by AECI provide 7 035 infants, orphans and vulnerable children with nutritious meals on a daily basis. For some, it’s the only “real” food they have all day.
Over R5 million, for example, has been invested in Joint Aid Management (JAM), one of our partners. This organisation works with communities that suffer from severe hunger and malnutrition as a direct result of the abject poverty that afflicts millions.
JAM also measures the stunting rate, waist size and height of all the children it feeds to assess the effectiveness of the nutrition programme over time.
In addition to the daily feeding programme, AECI’s investment empowers multiple communities with the necessary skills and tools to drive their own commercial or community food gardens. In the past year, seven communities have been supported to establish sustainable gardens. Produce from these is used for food security or sold to generate income.
